What is a PEO?
A Professional Employer Organization (PEO) helps small to mid-sized companies manage the everyday HR needs that smaller businesses struggle to handle alone, like paying employees, filing payroll taxes, providing health insurance (and other benefits), getting workers compensation coverage, writing employee policies, managing employee issues, and more.
What is a PEO & how does it work?
PEOs provide small companies with payroll support, benefits administration, workers’ compensation compliance, and human resources administration. These organizations offer a wide range of service, making it possible for small business to opt-in for the specific services they need.
What makes PEOs different from traditional HR outsourcing services is the co-employment model. When you partner with a PEO, the organization will issue W-2s to all your employees. For tax and legal purposes, the PEO you’re partnering with becomes the employer of record for your full- and part-time staff members, but you retain full control over your business and your employees.

Why is a PEO a good idea?
According to the National Association of Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO), nearly 180,000 small businesses work with PEOs and employ 3.7 million people. Companies that use a PEO grow faster, increase revenue and profits, and have happier, more engaged employees.
Businesses that use a PEO:
- grow 7-9% faster than businesses that don’t.
- have 10-14% lower employee turnover.
- have 2x the revenue growth of businesses that don’t.
- are 50% less likely to go out of business.
